THE WORD ON THE STREET – Mr. Magorium
I was watching Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium last weekend. I guess I should explain that I have always had an affinity for children’s movies lasting way past my childhood. I think my years in the DA’s office only exacerbated it. Much to my husband, Joe’s chagrin, I want nothing of murder and intrigue. I love fantasy. Something that feels good to watch. Joe was going out of town and so he left Mr. Magorium to entertain me while he was away. Midway through the movie I was stunned by the depth of something Molly Mahoney (the lead character) asked. She asked Henry, who plays the skeptical accountant in the movie, if when he looked at her he noticed anything about her. Like most men, Henry comes up with something he thinks she will like and guesses her eyes. Undeterred by his complete lack of understanding, she goes on to ask specifically about a sparkle. Now he looks utterly confused. At this point she resorts to a definition of sorts. She says, “A sparkle – as when you reflect something bigger that is inside you.”
The point was completely lost on him – but not on me. Wow, I thought to myself- profundity- and in a kid flick! It immediately brought to my mind what it means to be a Christian and to be given the Holy Spirit. That should emanate – shouldn’t it? A sparkle, if you will – a glimmer of something much bigger than I am.
Just like Mahoney (as she is called in the movie), I want to know what other people see in me. Is it me, Dianah, or do they see who I belong to? Would they see Jesus Christ in me even if I never told them He is my Savior?
The Message puts it this way as it paraphrases Paul describing how we are to be transformed “…nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face… our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.” (2 Corinthians 3:18). And in Matthew 5:14 Jesus, Himself, tells me what that should look like saying, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
I don’t know if Molly was describing God when she talked about reflecting something bigger that is inside you. Since it is Hollywood, my guess would be no…but it was such a dead-on description. Even if she wasn’t though, her question made me examine myself and I was left wondering, would you see a sparkle in me?
