THE BEAUTY BELLE – Skin Cancer At 36
In early December 2008, I was worried about a mole that had cropped up on my left cheek. I asked my esthetician about it, and she recommended that I go to the dermatologist to get it checked out if I was worried about it. It took the dermatologist about 2 seconds to say, “The spot you’re worried about is nothing, but have you ever noticed this spot above your eyebrow?” Well…no, I had not! It was a very faint, pinkish patchy spot that I had never noticed, and would not have thought twice about if I had noticed it.He took a biopsy, and about a week later I got a phone call telling me that I had basal cell carcinoma, and that I needed to schedule a surgery date to remove it. Although they assured me that this type of cancer is common and highly curable, “the C word” was still difficult to hear. Last week, I had what is called Moh’s surgery to remove the cancer, which left me with about 1 ½ inches of stitches from the edge of my eyebrow to my hairline. So, what is the point of me sharing this with all of you? GIRLFRIEND, APPLY SUNSCREEN DAILY!!!! Yes, all caps means I’m yelling at you…JUST DO IT! Applying sunscreen daily will reduce your risk of skin cancer AND wrinkles. You get the joy of knocking out two birds with one stone! You also need to go call your dermatologist to have a skin check…do this annually.

da best. Keep it going! Thank you
