BFF (BEAUTY & FASHION FOREVER!) – How Do You Dress For Fashion Week?

Folade's Blog 150x150When you think of Off Broadway what usually springs to mind are smaller plays with perhaps less expensive productions. The actors are talented and absorbed in their roles and the seats are full with an eager audience who love theater no matter the venue. The same can be said during fashion week. Tons of old and new designers are showcasing their new work for keen viewers who revel in the established, the new, and up-and-coming designers. Everyone flocks to New York for a chance to peek into the minds of fashion designers and see what new treats they have to offer.

Cashew Silk ShantungYesterday I was fortunate enough to make an “off broadway” fashion show by the eponymous doll maker Robert Tonner. Tonner who is best known for his successful collections of life-like dolls and their fashionable attire is also recognized in the fashion industry as the former design director for Bill Blass. As a fashion week novice (Project Runway and The Fashion Show being my closest encounters) I arrived to the Metropolitan Pavilion with nervous anticipation of the crowd and hoping I would fit in with my fashion choices, not to mention the press, the collection, and being there alone. I was seated in the front row, elated at the privilege, where I busied myself by observing the crowd, getting my camera ready, and reading the collection inspiration from the notes that were placed on each seat. One lady arrived in full costume makeup with a huge feathered hat and 6 inch heels!

Raja Gold GownThere was much buzz from the people surrounding me. Friends, family, editors, and admirers were discussing the design voice and the beautiful anticipated looks. When the show finally started I found there was much to concentrate on. I realized the judges on Project Runway have more work than it seems. Noticing the details of each piece – like the beautiful embroidery on many of Tonner’s pieces – recognizing the continuity of the line, the wearability, not to mention recognizing the role music played in the showcase, which included Rihanna, The Pussycat Dolls, and The Killers.

Staying focused on everything without being distracted, takes work. Luckily, this is one job I would be willing to do for free!

The inspiration for the collection was Bollywood meets Mad Men. If you’ve ever seen the AMC show then you would agree with Tonner that the Mad Men style is impeccable, as were his inspired designs. There were a lot of detailed hand embroidery and luscious fabric choices that included a variety of color-saturated silks. What caught my eye were several embroidered coats that would be perfect for my fall wardrobe.

When I caught up with Robert Tonner after the show he told me how exhilirating it was to finally have his collection on display and the sense of relief at achieving that moment. Enjoy the moment Mr. Tonner. It was fabulous!
