CONFESSIONS OF A HIGH MAINTENANCE CHICK – “Time to ‘Face’ Reality”

Submitted by Sheryl Porter on Tuesday, 3 November 2009No Comment

Sheryl 150 x 150Have you have ever dreamed of having your own reality TV show???  Unbeknownst to you, you probably are already starring in one.  Or, does Reality TV sicken you to the point of nausea???  I am sorry to inform that you, too, may be starring in your very own version.  Reality TV is popular because it gives the viewer a voyeuristic view into other people’s life.  However, with the increased popularity of Facebook, many people carry out their personal reality (or drama depending on who it is) to the point that the best TV plot lines are just a few keystrokes away and always on demand.

I had an ‘aha’ moment just a few weeks ago when my husband and his mother were talking in detail about her friend’s medical treatment.  The way they articulated the details and timeline, for a moment, I thought they were discussing a television show.  They were just recounting Facebook Status and Wall posts. Think about when reality TV really started becoming popular and how some friends or family members just didn’t seem to ‘get it’.  I remember talking about one of my favorite shows to my dad and him teasing me that it sounded like I was talking about real life people.

Here’s my prediction:  The more popular Facebook becomes, the less popular Reality TV will be.  Although I have no factual or scientific evidence for this statement, I think people will now get their daily dose of reality via Facebook with the people they know rather than strangers on the telly.

So how closely does Reality TV mirror Facebook?  Take the Facebook vs. Reality TV Quiz below.  From the scenarios below, 3 are plotlines from Reality TV Shows, 3 are situations from Facebook. Can you choose correctly?

1> Pretty Blonde hosts a charity event and asks three friends for assistance.

2> Pretty Blonde can’t wait to get the party started at a swanky fashion show.

3>The Ortiz Family, a happy family of 5, expands their brood by adopting adorable twin girls from Russia.

4> After several months of waiting for a birth mom to pick them, the Zumdahl’s receives a phone call from a pregnant young woman from Washington state

5> The struggles and triumphs of “The Psycho Parent Car Line” at Stockwell Place Elementary.  People start getting in line an hour before school lets out.

6> The struggles and triumphs of adorable children and their psycho parents.  Big changes are happening in their lives as their parents have to make a decision about their future

Answers:

1> Reality TV Show “The Girls Next Door”.  The pretty blond is Playmate Bridget Marquardt.

2> Facebook.

3> Facebook.

4> Reality TV Show “Adoption Diaries” on WE TV.

5> Facebook.

6> Reality Show “Jon and Kate plus 8”, or “Kate plus 8”.  Just because you can expand your uterus to the size of my SUV does not make you a celebrity.
