THE WORD ON THE STREET – My Tiny Treasure Box

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, 4 November 20092 Comments

dianah-150x150-avatarIt’s a small wooden box with faded gold letters on the top. The “Inspired Box” is what it’s called. My mom gave it to me as a hand-me down. I thought it quaint as I glanced over the tiny, faded pastel scrolls of scripture it contained. I was too busy to study it further; that was the extent of my observations.

It sat idle for many years on a bookshelf in my room, unopened. I was still too busy. I have packed it up and moved it with me from place to place but still it remained closed all through the years- until this year.

I am now a mom and as I was cleaning one day, I came across the tiny box. At an instant, I knew I wanted to share its contents with my son. He is only 2½ but as the years have gone by in my own life, I realize how life giving the words of God are to me. I wish I had studied them all of my life and had kept them all on the tip of my tongue and hidden in my heart. I want that for him.

I want to fill him up with God breathed scripture so he doesn’t falter or fret through every dilemma and decision and often going the wrong direction as I did while growing up. I want him to be wise with the kind of wisdom that can only come from God.

So I set the tiny box on our breakfast table and watched as his tiny fingers grasped a scroll. We unrolled it together. Our first verse we memorized was “the Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.” What a divine truth! The weight of what that means is just so amazing. What peace it brings- and I didn’t even know that verse was in there! How I wish I had learned that one at his age. As I sit here typing now, I hear God speaking these words over me and I want to throw my hands up to heaven to be picked up like a child and feel the safety of the Father’s arms. I am so thankful.

You have no tiny treasure box you say? Ah, but don’t you? It may not be in the form of tiny faded scrolls of scripture but it is all in the word of God. Is it on your bookshelf or nightstand?

Perhaps it is time to blow the dust off and let the words distill in your heart and impart life to you.

Or maybe it’s the perfect time for you to make your own “Inspired Box” to share with your children as your Heavenly Father has shared with you.
