CONFESSIONS OF A HIGH MAINTENANCE CHICK – The Princess, The Frog And The Bubble Bath
Walt Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” debuts in theaters everywhere Friday, December 11th. The animated motion picture features the famous voices of Anika Noni Rose (from Dreamgirls), Terrance Howard, John Goodman and Oprah. That special little princess in your life can take home a piece of “The Princess and the Frog” from the beauty line, Carol’s Daughter. The Magical Beauty Collection is a line of children’s shampoo, conditioner, hair detangler and bubble bath all priced from $8 to $10.
The story behind how Carol’s Daughter went from a kitchen to mainstream is pretty impressive… a modern day fairytale of one woman’s dream. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lisa Price (her mother is the famous Carol), creator of Carol’s Daughter, for an interview for Southern Beauty Magazine.
Southern Beauty: Did you ever expect Carol’s Daughter to be as successful as it is today?
Lisa Price: No, not at all. I had hoped it would be successful enough to be my job. I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I really thought it would be a mail order business or a web business but not what it is now.
SB: What first inspired you to start cooking products in your very own kitchen?
LP: It actually stems from my love of fragrance and needing to have ancillary products to go with those fragrances. I needed creams and shower gels in order to layer my scent and it all started out as a hobby.
SB: What inspires you now?
LP: It’s an honor and it’s also this great responsibility to be a company that is ‘first’ with certain things. We’re not first with everything, but there are a lot of things we do that are new and different for the industry and for our core consumer. So, what drives me now is maintaining that level of expectation to deliver, being relevant, staying new, trying to stay fresh and at the same time just wanting to be here.
SB: Any kitchen mishaps?
LP: Oh, yeah. (laughs) There have been things that curdled. I’ve tried to make soap one time and it was a mess. Also, I made a shampoo with sea moss and when I first made it, I put in too much. A customer was trying it and when she opened the bottle to smell it, it exploded and shot across the room. We sell the shampoo now, but the recipe has since been fixed.
SB: Your products are known to be for Mind, Body and Spirit. Explain how Carol’s Daughter’s products nurture the spirit.
LP: I feel like aromas make us feel either good or bad depending on what they are. Some people can smell an aroma like vanilla and be transported to a memory, like me, being in the kitchen baking with my grandmother. But, if you had a boyfriend who wore vanilla and you didn’t break-up nicely, it can make you upset (laughs). Fragrance evokes different feelings. Taking five minutes for a Sea Salt Scrub in the shower can really relieve a lot of stress at the end of the day. You’re taking care of your skin by exfoliating, but taking time for yourself helps you take care of your spirit as well.
SB: Your hair products are hot and represent a large portion of your business. What hair types can use Carol’s Daughter hair products and how do you know which ones to use?
LP: A lot of our products are geared to more textured, curly, dry hair, hair that’s been processed which covers a wide range of people. For example, someone whose hair is not as thick as mine, but uses hair color and has dry ends may be able to take a product like Hair Milk and use it to moisturize and condition their ends. However, I can take it and use it all over my head. So we each use them differently. The best thing to do is experiment. Speak to a beauty advisor and find out the best ways to use them.
SB: You have been quoted as saying, “As Carol’s Daughter, I’m not allowed to have a bad hair day.” What do you recommend for us when we are faced with those dreaded bad hair days?
LP: (laughs) I just feel like Hair Milk just works miracles for me. I wake up in the morning and my hair is smashed on my head and somehow I put the Hair Milk in there and get those curls back. Something like Hair Balm gives a pop of shine when you hair is looking dull. There are a lot of little instant tricks you can use to just spruce it up.
SP: What product are you most proud?
LP: It’s easy to say Hair Milk because it’s our # 1 product. And I am proud of that because I struggled with it when I made it in my kitchen. It would separate and it was very hard to get it stable, so for it to be my #1 product is pretty cool. But overall, I’m really proud of Pearls, our fine fragrance because it was something I wanted to do for a really long time and I remember that experience shopping in a department store for a fragrance.
