A GIRL’S GUIDE TO WHAT MATTERS MOST – “She Dances” Raises Awareness On Human Trafficking
Recently, my husband and I sat with the founders of She Dances, Jeremy and Nedra Springer, at a quaint coffee shop in Birmingham. She Dances is a non-profit organization “whose mission is to provide healing, hope, and a future for girls who are victims of human trafficking. Through safe homes, raising awareness, and the arts they strive to create a movement of freedom.” Jeremy and Nedra often meet with people like my husband and I who want to get involved in some way. The welcoming couple told us the story of how the organization began and where the name originated.
How it all began…
Jeremy, a former member of the band Thalon, began to raise awareness of human trafficking at concerts. However, his desire to bring freedom to these victims went far beyond just raising awareness. He and his wife wanted to extend help directly to these young, abused girls. When at one of Thalon’s concerts, a rescued victim of human trafficking told of her heartbreaking story. Jeremy later saw this young girl full of freedom dancing and twirling to the music. “As she spun around and around laughing and dancing a vision of freedom was instilled within our hearts that could not be ignored. From selling a t-shirt and raising awareness at concerts, to providing a safe place for victims of human trafficking, our movement began.”
How Can You Get Involved?
This movement started with a simple but strong desire to make a difference, and you, too, can help them in their efforts. There are several ways to help. Currently, She Dances is providing a safe home for girls in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. “Precious girls, all under the age of 18 who have been sexually exploited and so wrongfully placed in a world of slavery will now have hope. Rescue, restoration, mental therapy, education, and spiritual renewal will take place as they experience freedom.”
By visiting the She Dances’ website, you can start by giving a one time donation or set up a monthly donation. Also, you can purchase a She Dances T-shirt. Your money will go towards the organization’s efforts in raising awareness and providing a safe home for these victims.
If you’re looking to get more involved, you can bring founder Jeremy Springer to your college, school, church, or social gathering to speak on human trafficking and to help make others aware of this serious issue. In addition, you can host a 10k for 10k, a concert, an art show, or human trafficking training. Lastly, you can start a She Dances chapter in your school.
