I have a question for you. After I had my babies I got this darker skin color on my upper lip and it really bothers me. During the summer months it gets even darker. Is there anything I can do to fight this?

    • Lisa says:

      Hi Trina,

Great question! The darker skin is caused by an increase of melanin. It’s melanin in the skin that gives us our skin tone.

Often hormonal changes will cause this skin discoloration. Obviously, pregnancy and oral contraceptives cause hormonal fluctuations. During the summer months when we are exposed to the sun the melanin production increases and those already dark areas get even darker.

The best way to prevent this darkening is to protect the skin against the sun and to always wear sunscreen. I suggest you wear a sunscreen made for the facial area that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide or both. Stay away from a product that contains alot of added chemical sunscreen ingredients.

There are several ingredients that will help to lighten the skin. Hydroquinone is a popular ingredient but it can be irritating and some countries have banned its usage. (if you choose a product that contains hydroquinone make sure it is used in a small percentage.) Kojic acid is a natural ingredient made from fungi (mushroom). Alpha and glycolic acid products help to exfoliate the skin or slough off those upper skin cells so they will help to lighten those areas.

Skinbright Skin Brightener and Revitol Skin Lightener have both shown good results in studies. They both can be ordered on the internet.

Good luck in finding the right product for your skin and use your sunscreen!!

Hi! I have a 12-year-old daughter who needs guidance on good skin-care. She is now just using Ivory soap to wash her face. Do have a product or line to recommend that would help with oily skin and occasional blemishes, but that doesn’t involve more maintenance than a preteen can handle?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Lisa says:

    Hey Amy,

great question! I think that it’s important to start using a skin care program just as soon as you begin to see those puberty induced kinds of things start to happen.

Have your daughter go to http://www.goodforyougirls.com. This is a great website! Not only does it have some wonderful products but it has good info about the skin, ingredients to look for and avoid and even tips about how to wash your face. – Also http://www.amieskincare.com is a great site. Both these lines are based on natural ingredients and do not contain parabens, petrochemicals or irritants.

Burt’s Bees now has a new acne line called Natural Acne Solution. It does not sound that your daughter is dealing with that now and hopefully she won’t!!! But, if she does I’m sure that these products would be great. Again no parabens, petrols etc.

Hopefully, your 12 year old will start good skin habits now. She’ll be glad that she did!

I am interested in doing a mini beauty boot camp for a small group. How can I find out more about doing something like this.

    Thanks

Hi. Years ago, I read about a product used in hot, humid climates that helps to prevent make-up from being sweated off the face. I understand models in Miami often use this. I’ve tried to find out what this is and hoped that you could help me. Are you familiar with any products like this?
    Thanks

  • Tonya says:

This may be a silly question but…do I remove my makeup before using my cleaning products?

    • Lisa says:

      Hey Tonya,

Not a silly question!! They do make products that supposedly target makeup removal. You then use a cleanser afterwards. – I only use a facial cleanser and feel that if you use one that is made for that particular purpose, NO Dial soap, that it will break down the makeup and also clean the face. We have a great list of favorite Cleansers included in the Review section that will do a great job! Be sure and use a Toner afterwards to complete the cleansing process.

Thanks for a great question and God Bless,

      Lisa

  • Tonya says:

Is it okay to use a cleanser from one line, a toner from another, and a moisturizer from yet another line? The same with foundations & powder.

  • LIsa says:

Another good question!!! Years ago when I sold Mary Kay they would not even sell their skin care products piece by piece unless you had initially purchased the entire 3 piece system. The reason being, companies formulate their skin care lines to work together. The ingredients are made to compliment each other. When the “system” is used as recommended you get the best possible results. Ok, all that said, will your face “blow up” if you use a little bit of this and that? No, but we suggest that if a company makes a cleanser, toner and moisturizer in a particular “line” than it is best to use those together.

I don’t necessarily think that the same rule applies to all one brand of product for your color. I myself use several different brands of color products on my face. I will often experiment with my color choices, ie. powder, eye shadow, blush etc. whereas I might not do that with my skin care.

    Hope that helps!
